Remarks

Stanley worked as a house and sign painter before receiving formal arts training in the 1830s. He traveled along the Santa Fe Trail and throughout the western United States in the 1840s, and accompanied major Stephen W. Kearney on a military expedition to California as a topographical draftsman with the Corps of Topographic Engineers in 1846. Stanley painted portraits of American Indians and panoramic images of the United States West. Most of his work was destroyed by a series of fires.
