Born and raised on the Ohio frontier, Whittredge was largely self-taught. He studied art in Europe in the 1850s, then returned to the United States. Whittredge made several trips to the West in the 1860s, sketching what he saw there. On his return to New York he turned the sketches into oil landscape paintings. Whittredge became a leading painter of the Hudson River School art movement. His landscapes glorified the natural beauty of the American West.
