Louis D. Nimschke was born in Germany in 1834, and moved to the United States in 1850. He was based in New York and active from 1850-1900. He worked independently and engraved for Colt, Winchester, Remington, Spencer and more than 100 other different gun makers. It is estimated that he engraved 5,000 guns in his lifetime, and he developed an international following.
