Remarks

Elizabeth Bacon Custer was the wife of George Armstrong Custer; they were married in 1864. Elizabeth prided herself on always following her husband's regiment. In her books written between 1885 and 1890, Elizabeth described the bad food, boredom, and long periods apart from her husband during her years of roughing it. As Custer's widow, Elizabeth made a living as a writer and public speaker. Her autobiographies celebrated Western expansion, defended Indian removal, and shaped public opinion of General Custer as a model family man and national hero.
