"The Poet Scout"

Remarks

Sometimes called the Poet Scout, Crawford had a long and varied career. He began as a Union soldier in the Civil War, where he was wounded four times as part of the famous 48th Pennsylvania Volunteers. He moved to the Black Hills region of Dakota Territory, and was, among other things, the first newspaper correspondent there. Crawford was later chief of scouts in Custer's Indian campaigns, and carried news of the Battle of Little Big Horn 350 miles in three and a half days. He ended his frontier career as an agent for the Department of Justice, charged with arresting bootleggers who sold alcohol to North American Indians. He then joined William "Doc" Carver's wild west show.
