Remarks

Born into a family of artists in Germany, Nahl studied art in Paris. He emigrated with his brother to the United States in 1849, and together they traveled to California goldfields, finally settling in San Francisco to work as commercial photographers and illustrators. Charles C. Nahl became one of the leading painters of California mining, vaquero, and pioneer life.
