Born in Prussia, Baumann emigrated from Prussia as a child in the mid-19th century, settling in Buffalo, New York. He moved west to join the U.S. Army, serving as an army scout against American Indians under General Custer and Major Reno. He also hunted buffalo on the Great Plains. Baumann returned to Buffalo, New York, in the early 1890s to open a butcher shop.
