Horace Smith & Daniel B. Wesson both worked for the firm of Robbins & Lawrence in Windsor, VT. They formed their own partnership in Norwich, CT in 1852, and later moved to Springfield, MA. Smith & Wesson earned fame through many innovations, including the first self-contained cartridge and the first double-action handgun. The firm outfitted the Union army during Civil War.
