Remarks

Crook, a Civil War and Indian War soldier, was arguably considered the greatest fighter against American Indians of his time; he forced Geronimo to surrender numerous times. Despite his occupation, he was known for his respect of the North American Indian tribes both on and off the battlefield. Near the end of his life, he campaigned vigorously on behalf of the tribes, particularly the Lakota, and often spoke out against white encroachment on Native land and broken federal treaties. Crook designed the U.S. Cavalry's Indian scouts program.
