Remarks

Francisco Xavier Sepúlveda and his family moved from Mexico to Alta California in 1780 as part of the Spanish military. The Sepúlvedas became a prominent Californio family during the 19th century. Fernando Sepúlveda (1814-1875) and his brothers owned several large ranchos in southern California, and became active in local politics. Their sister, Concepcion, married into the wealthy de la Guerra family. Like many other Californios, the Sepúlvedas lost much of their land to drought, legal fees and taxes after California became part of the United States. By the 1870s, many large Californio ranches like the Sepúlvedas' had come under American ownership and were divided into small family farms.
