Remarks

In 1782, José María Pico (circa 1765-1819) became a presidio soldier in Southern California. This founder of the prominent Californio Pico family is believed to have been of mixed European, African and Indian descent. Like many Californios, the Pico family achieved wealth and influence through large land grants from the Mexican government. José Pico and his wife María Estaquia Gutierrez had twelve children. Their son Pio Pico (1801-1894) became a governor of Mexican California and later a prominent resident of Los Angeles after California became part of the United States.
