Christian Frederick Martin, Sr., (1796-1867) began his guitar shop in New York City, New York, in 1833. He moved to Nazareth, Pennsylvania, selling his New York retail store to music dealer Ludecus & Wolter. After his death he was succeeded by his son, Christian Frederick Martin, Jr., (1819-1888), who converted the business from a small craft workshop to a factory in 1859.
