Janet McOmie Sherlock Smith was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1844. She converted to Mormon Church and emigrated to the United States in 1861 and walked across half the continent to Utah where she married Richard Sherlock. In 1868 she moved with her husband and three children to the mining town of South Pass City, Wyoming. After her husband's death In 1873 Smith owned and managed a saloon and hotel and serving as election clerk and postmistress for the city. In she married owner of the local general store, James Smith. Janet Sherlock Smith died in 1923.
