Remarks

Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo (1807-1890) served as military commandant of northern California under the Mexican government. Vallejo also owned large grants of land throughout Alta California and founded the Mexican settlement of Sonoma Valley. He supported the annexation of California to the United States in 1848 and served as state senator of California in 1849. Despite Vallejo's land loss to squatters, drought, and legal fees under the 1851 Land Claims Act, his family maintained a powerful position in society. His son Platon was a successful doctor, and his daughters married into prominent European-American families. In the 1920s, his granddaughter Francesca McGettigan became a respected composer.
