Father Junipero Serra was a missionary born in Spain. He supervised the planning, construction and staffing of nine missions in California (including San Diego and San Francisco) and is said to have walked 24,000 miles visiting the missions from his office in Monterey. He was beatified by the Roman Catholic Church in 1988.
