Alfred Jacob Miller was born in 1810 in Baltimore, where he attended the local schools. With the support of his family, who strongly encouraged his interest in art, and with financial backing of wealthy patrons from Baltimore, Miller embarked on a tour of France and Italy in 1832-34. After in Europe, Miller at first, opened a studio in Baltimore, but in 1837 decided to relocated to New Orleans. There he met the Scottish adventurer William Drummond Stewart (1795-1871) who hired him to record his hunting journey to the Rocky Mountains. Traveling with the American Fur Company, Miller and Stewart witnessed the 1837 rendezvous, where Native peoples and fur traders came together for business and pleasure. In 1840 Miller traveled to Stewart’s Murthly Castle in Scotland, where several of his paintings were hung. He returning to Baltimore in 1842 and eventually established himself as an successful portrait artist. He died in Baltimore in 1874.
