Carrie Bethel was born in 1898, near the shores of Mono Lake, California. By the time she reached her mid-twenties she was competing at the June Lake and Yosemite Indian Field Days. For these competitions, Bethel wove several large baskets and dozens of smaller baskets, all the while working as a laundress in Tioga Lodge at Mono Lake. In 1939 she worked as cultural demonstrator at the Indian Exhibition of the Golden Gate International Exposition, and her baskets were sold at trading post near San Francisco. Many of her larger baskets were purchased by the collector James Schwabacher. Carrie Bethel died on February 24, 1974 and is buried in Lee Vining, California.
