Remarks

In 1846, the United States annexed the Republic of Texas, which had declared its independence from Mexico ten years earlier. Mexico had never recognized Texas independence, and war ensued. When Mexico City fell in 1847, Mexico conceded defeat. Some Americans argued for taking all Mexico. In the end, the United States acquired over a third of Mexico's territory through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
