Remarks

Dime novels offered adventure tales of the Wild West to a national audience. Popular, cheap, and formulaic, these novels sensationalized the Western hero--and heroine. Early novels introduced readers to the Western heroine, disguised as a man, who saved the day. The beautiful woman with the toughness and skill of a man became a recurring character.
