Remarks

North American Indians have rich and long histories, with dynamic cultures; their stories do not begin when the first European explorers set foot on their lands. Tribes fished in the Pacific Ocean, grew corn along the Colorado and Missouri Rivers, and hunted bison (buffalo) on the Plains. The contact with Europeans unleashed profound changes for the North American Indians and their lands. As Europeans searched for new trade routes and valuable natural resources, their activities in the Americas, had far-reaching consequences for the people and the landscape of the American West.
