Remarks

Soon after the American Revolution, the leaders of the new United States republic dedicated themselves to turning their western frontier into family farms and prosperous market towns. In the region west of the Appalachian Mountains, the federal government negotiated land cessions from the North American Indian tribes, then surveyed and sold the land. The federal government also built schools, roads, and canals and ran territorial governments. Across the Mississippi River, the government sent out explorers to find trade routes to Asia and report back on the natural resources and people of the region.
