Learn More -- The Colt Revolver in the American West -- A Symbol of Independence
Term

A Symbol of Independence

Qualifier

Greg Martin Colt Gallery

Remarks

The Colt revolver is also associated with key events in American history that took place outside the American West. A notable example relates to the Charter Oak, a large white oak tree that stood for generations in Hartford, Connecticut. When Connecticut’s royal charter was supposedly hidden from the British in the hollow of the tree in 1687, it became a symbol of independence and democracy. After the Charter Oak fell in 1856, relics were made from its wood, including grips for deluxe presentation revolvers presented by Samuel Colt.
