Remarks

Coiled basketry is a type of basketry that starts at the center bottom of the basket, then spirals upon itself in rounds, each coil attached to the one before. Weaving coiled baskets is a sewing technique where the basket-maker uses an awl to punch holes in the foundation material through which sewing strands are then drawn. New stitches cover the foundation material and pass through the stitches of the previous row. The sewing strands are traditionally made from local plant fibers split and trimmed to a uniform size.
