Painting by John Mix Stanley, Crossing the Milk River 1853, after 1853. No signature. Artist John Mix Stanley first visited the West in 1839. In the 1850s, when Stanley painted the Milk River in Montana, it was still an important travel route for the fur trade. In his day, critics celebrated his works as both accurate and beautiful.
