Samuel Colt built his first manufacturing plant in Paterson, New Jersey, in 1836 to produce his six-cylinder revolver. Incorporated in 1855 as Colt's Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company, the company expanded in the late 19th century to produce a wide range of sidearms, rifles and shotguns. The company was reorganized as Colt Industries in 1964 (the fireams subsidiary became Colt's Inc., Firearms Division). The Firearms Division was sold in 1990; the rest of the company was sold to a group of employees, investors, and the State of Connecticut, and renamed Colt's Manufacturing Company, Inc.
