In 1854, Oliver Winchester, a shirt manufacturer from New Haven, Connecticut, invested in Volcanic Repeating Arms Company (which had grown out of Smith & Wesson's early partnership in Norwich, Connecticut), and moved the company to New Haven. When Volcanic Repeating Arms Company declared insolvency in 1857, Winchester gained control of the company, renaming it New Haven Arms Company. After the Civil War, it was reorganized as Winchester Repeating Arms Company. The Winchester rifle held a prominent place in popular memory of the American West.
