Remarks

William Drummond Stewart was the younger son of a Scottish lord. Having served at the Battle of Waterloo and traveled extensively in Europe, he came to America in 1832 in search of adventure; in the early 1800s, wealthy men in search of excitement often headed for the American West. For eight years he hunted in the West collecting souvenirs of his adventures. Artist Alfred Jacob Miller accompanied Stewart and recorded his adventures.
