Remarks

The Robbins & Lawrence Armory and Machine Shop designed and manufactured machine tools that improved the production of interchangeable gun parts during the 1840s and 1850s. These technological advances sped up the industrial revolution by making mass production more practical. Robbins & Lawrence also produced 10,000 "Mississippi" rifles for the United States government in the 1850s, and also produced firearms for the British government. Intially started in Windsor, Vermont, the firm built a new plant in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1853 to expand its production. However, expected orders for rifles did not come through, and the firm went into bankruptcy. Following this business failure, the Robbins & Lawrence Armory housed a series of new manufacturing firms.
