Remarks

Hostilities between European-Americans and North American Indians periodically led to armed conflict after the American Revolution. European-American victories in the late 18th and early 19th centuries cleared the way for their settlement of the trans-Appalachian frontier. Warfare also accompanied European-American expansion into the trans-Mississippi West in the 1850s and 1860s. After the Civil War, the United States military tried to clear all Indians out of the Great Plains, a region once considered their permanent home.
