- Remarks
During the early 1830s, Sauk and Fox Indians, led by Black Hawk, refused to recognize an 1804 treaty that ceded much of their territory to the federal government and gave them very little in return. In 1832, the Sauk and Fox returned to their lands east of the Mississippi River, resisting European-American settlement in the region with force. After fifteen weeks of battle between the Fox Indians and United States troops, the Indians were forced to cede their land to the United States, except for a tract set apart for the Sauk who had not participated in the war. In return, the federal government assumed $40,000 in American Indian debts and paid annuities (yearly payments) to the Indians.
